Devotions, Dealing With Pain

“NEAR TO THE BROKEN-HEARTED”

Based on Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Devotion

Pain can make us feel incredibly alone. When life falls apart—when we lose someone, face rejection, or walk through disappointment—it often feels like no one truly understands. Even well-meaning friends sometimes struggle to find the right words. But Psalm 34:18 assures us of a powerful truth: “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

This verse isn’t just poetic comfort—it’s a promise grounded in God’s character. When we’re broken-hearted, when the weight of sorrow presses on our chest, God doesn’t remain distant or aloof. He draws near. He is present in our pain, not as a distant deity, but as a compassionate Father who cares deeply for His children.

The Hebrew word used for “broken-hearted” conveys more than just sadness—it speaks of someone shattered or fractured by life’s burdens. Likewise, being “crushed in spirit” suggests a depth of despair where it feels like all strength and hope are gone. These aren’t light emotions; they are the moments that break us. And it’s exactly in those moments that God steps in close.

Throughout Scripture, God’s nearness is often tied to comfort. In Isaiah 57:15, God says He lives in “a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit.” In the Gospels, Jesus draws close to the hurting, the outcast, the grieving. His nearness isn’t just spiritual—it’s deeply personal.

Perhaps you’re facing something right now that’s left you heartbroken. Maybe it’s the death of a loved one, a broken relationship, a health diagnosis, or the ache of long-unanswered prayer. Pain is part of our human experience, but it’s not one we face alone. God sees it. He honours your tears. He draws near.

But how do we actually experience His nearness?

Sometimes it comes through prayer—a sense of peace that doesn’t make sense given the circumstances. Other times it’s through people—friends or even strangers who show up with kindness. Often, God speaks through His Word, reminding us that our suffering is not forgotten. He has not walked away. He is close.

Psalm 34 is written by David during a time of real fear and trouble. He had been running for his life, making desperate decisions just to survive. In the midst of that chaos, David declares the Lord’s goodness. Why? Because he had experienced it—first-hand and in real time. Even in fear, even in uncertainty, David found that God never left him.

And God won’t leave you either.

When we feel crushed, the enemy whispers lies: “You’re alone. You’re abandoned. You’re forgotten.” But God’s Word tells a different story. He is with the broken-hearted. He saves the crushed in spirit. This is not temporary sympathy—it’s the long, faithful companionship of a God who loves deeply and rescues powerfully.

As followers of Jesus, we also hold the hope that our pain is never wasted. God uses even the most broken parts of our story to bring healing, to build empathy, and to draw others to Him. That doesn’t mean He causes the pain—but He never wastes it. In our most fragile moments, He can bring about something redemptive and beautiful.

So today, if your heart is heavy, know this: you are not alone. The Lord is close—closer than you know. He sees you. He cares. And He will not leave you in the valley.

Reflection Questions

  1. When have I felt “broken-hearted” or “crushed in spirit”? How did I see or experience God’s presence during that time?
  2. Are there any lies I’ve believed in pain—such as “God doesn’t care” or “I’m alone”? What truth does Psalm 34:18 offer instead?
  3. How can I extend God’s comfort to someone else who may be walking through a time of brokenness?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You that You are near to the broken-hearted and that You save those who are crushed in spirit. When I feel overwhelmed, forgotten, or alone, remind me that You are close. Thank You that I don’t have to carry my pain alone. Help me to rest in Your presence and trust in Your comfort. Heal what is broken in me, and make me someone who brings hope to others walking through hardship.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.
