Devotional: Dealing with Pain — A Glimpse of Glory
Based on Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
— Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
Pain is a reality none of us can avoid. Whether it’s the ache of losing a loved one, the sting of betrayal, the burden of chronic illness, or the heaviness of emotional and mental suffering — pain is a universal part of the human experience. Some seasons of life seem soaked in sorrow, and even our prayers can feel like they’re echoing in silence. In these times, Revelation 21:4 offers us a breathtaking glimpse into God’s promise of a future without pain.
This verse comes near the end of the Bible, in the final vision given to the apostle John. It paints a picture of a new heaven and a new earth — not a far-off fantasy, but a very real, very tangible promise from God. John writes of a day when all suffering will cease. Every tear will be personally wiped away by God Himself. Death, mourning, crying, and pain — the very things that now shape so much of our lives — will be no more.
It’s a powerful hope. But what does it mean for us today, when pain is still our constant companion?
Firstly, this verse reminds us that pain is temporary. That’s hard to accept when you’re in the thick of it. But God’s Word tells us the current “order of things” — the brokenness we now live in — will pass away. We are heading toward a place where pain cannot follow. This future is not built on empty sentiment, but on the faithfulness of a God who has always kept His promises. Jesus’ resurrection is our guarantee that the worst this world can throw at us is not the end of the story.
Secondly, God is not distant from our suffering. Revelation 21:4 doesn’t say pain disappears into thin air. It says He will wipe away every tear. That’s an image of closeness, tenderness, and intimacy. God doesn’t stand aloof from our pain; He draws near. He sees every tear, hears every groan, and carries every burden we bear. He’s not a God who tells us to “toughen up” or “get over it.” He is a loving Father who holds us through the storm and walks with us until the storm is over.
And thirdly, we’re allowed to grieve, even as we hope. Christianity doesn’t ask us to pretend everything is fine. We live in a fallen world. Hearts break, bodies fail, relationships crumble. But even in our deepest wounds, we do not grieve as those without hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). God gives us space to cry, to lament, and to be honest. And as we bring our pain to Him, we open ourselves to His healing presence.
Revelation 21:4 is not just about what’s to come — it speaks into our present. It tells us that pain is not the full story. It will not have the last word. God will. And His word is healing, restoration, and eternal peace.
So if you’re walking through pain today, know this: You’re not forgotten. You’re not alone. And this won’t last forever. Fix your eyes on the One who promises to wipe away every tear — not just someday, but who even now holds you in the midst of it all. Let His presence be your strength. Let His promise be your anchor.
Pain may shape your story, but it does not define your future.
Reflection Questions:
- What kind of pain or sorrow are you carrying right now, and how can you bring it honestly before God today?
- How does the promise of Revelation 21:4 change the way you view your current suffering?
- In what ways can you be a reflection of God’s comfort to someone else who is hurting?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You for the promise that one day You will wipe away every tear. Thank You for being near to me in my suffering and for understanding my pain better than I ever could. Help me to hold on to hope, even when life hurts. Remind me daily that this world is not my final home, and that a day is coming when all things will be made new. Give me the courage to face each day with Your strength and the grace to comfort others with the comfort You’ve given me.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
