Devotions, Prayer

Devotional: Prayer for the Church
Scripture: Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

The Apostle Paul’s words in Ephesians 6:18 come at the close of his well-known passage about the armour of God. After encouraging believers to stand firm in spiritual battle, he closes with this powerful charge—to pray. Not just for ourselves, but for “all the Lord’s people.” This includes our local church family, our leaders, and the global body of Christ.

In today’s world, the Church faces many challenges. Cultural opposition, spiritual apathy, division, discouragement, and distractions all take their toll. But through prayer, we can stand in the gap. Prayer is not a last resort—it’s our frontline defence. Paul tells us to pray “on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” This is both a call to constant communion with God and a reminder that no situation is too small or too great to bring before Him.

When we pray for the Church, we align ourselves with God’s heart. Jesus Himself prayed for His followers in John 17, asking the Father for their unity, protection, and sanctification. If our Saviour prioritised prayer for His people, how much more should we?

Prayer for the Church can take many forms. We can pray for spiritual revival, for boldness in witness, for unity among believers, for protection from false teaching, and for wisdom and strength for pastors and leaders. We can also lift up specific needs within our local congregation—healing for the sick, comfort for the grieving, and provision for those in hardship.

One of the most powerful aspects of praying for the Church is that it shifts our focus from self to others. It draws us into a deeper love for God’s people and fosters humility and compassion. It reminds us that we are not isolated individuals, but part of a greater body—a living, breathing community knit together by Christ.

In Acts 2, we see the early Church devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Their unity and dependence on God through prayer was foundational to their growth and impact. As a result, the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Our world today still needs the kind of Church that prays earnestly. A Church that doesn’t rely on clever programs or slick presentation, but on the Spirit’s power. A praying Church is a powerful Church. When we pray together, we invite God’s presence to dwell richly among us, His wisdom to guide us, and His power to work through us.

It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of ministry, the routine of Sabbath services, and the practical demands of church life. But if prayer is not at the centre, we are operating in our own strength. And that will always fall short.

So, whether you’re a pastor, a volunteer, or someone who sits quietly in the pew, your prayers matter. They make a difference. They are heard by the God who loves His Church far more than we ever could.

Let’s become people who, like Paul, are “always keeping on praying” for God’s people. Let’s intercede for the Church to be strong, united, Spirit-filled, and faithful in this generation. And let’s trust that, as we pray, God is working in ways we cannot see—strengthening His bride, the Church, to shine His light in the world.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How often do I intentionally pray for my church and its leaders?
  2. What are some specific needs within my church or community that I can begin praying for today?
  3. How can I encourage others around me to join in prayer for our church and the wider body of Christ?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You for the gift of the Church—the body of Christ, united in Your love and called to reflect Your glory. Today, I lift up my church and the Church around the world. Strengthen our leaders with wisdom and courage. Unite us in Your truth and love. Revive us by Your Spirit. May we be a light in dark places, a haven for the broken, and a voice of hope. Teach us to pray with passion and persistence, trusting that You hear us and work through our prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.

Graham Hood.
