Devotional: Holding Fast When Empires Rise
Scripture: Revelation 13:1–10 (NIV)
“The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority… All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life… This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.” (Selected verses)
Revelation 13 paints a disturbing and sobering picture of the future—a time when a powerful beast, empowered by the dragon (Satan), rises up with authority to rule, blaspheme God, persecute the saints, and demand worship. This beast symbolises a worldly empire or system that stands in direct opposition to God, and it captures the loyalty of nearly all humanity—except for those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
This passage challenges our understanding of Church and State in a very real and prophetic sense. It reminds us that there will be systems of government or power on the earth that are not just ungodly, but openly opposed to God. These systems may demand allegiance that competes with our devotion to Christ, and in such times, the true nature of our faith will be revealed.
Revelation 13 is not merely about the end times; it’s also a lens through which we can view the recurring struggle between godly allegiance and worldly pressure throughout history. From Babylon to Rome, from empires to ideologies, the beast-like spirit has appeared in various forms—always seeking to control, deceive, and draw worship away from the true God.
For believers, the message is clear: do not be deceived. The world may admire power, charisma, military might, and smooth speech, but we are called to discernment. While many will be swept up in the propaganda of the age, God’s people are to remain rooted in Christ, even when it leads to persecution or marginalisation. Verse 10 closes with this haunting yet hopeful call: “This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.”
This verse is the heart of the Christian response to hostile political or spiritual powers. We are not called to panic, nor are we called to fight with the weapons of the world. We are called to endure. To remain faithful. To trust that the Lamb—Jesus Christ—will ultimately triumph over all who oppose Him.
There may come times when the Church will no longer be welcome in the public square. Laws may change. Freedoms may shrink. The cost of following Jesus may rise. But we should not be surprised—Revelation 13 tells us these things will come. And it tells us how to respond: with faith, with courage, and with the unshakable knowledge that our names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
This doesn’t mean disengaging from society or government. Christians should still pray for leaders, seek justice, and be a light in the world. But we must never give the kind of worship or loyalty to the State that belongs only to God. When earthly power demands what God forbids—or forbids what God commands—we are called to stand firm, no matter the cost.
In the face of the beast, our greatest weapon is not political strength, but spiritual endurance. Not shouting, but faithfulness. Not panic, but peace that comes from knowing who holds the final victory.
This vision of the beast is heavy, but it ends with hope. For the beast may rise, but it will fall. The dragon may rage, but the Lamb reigns forever.
So let us be a people of patient endurance—eyes fixed on Jesus, hearts rooted in truth, and lives that testify to the Kingdom of God, even when the world bows to something else.
This devotional touches on some very weighty prophesy. It can be quite disturbing but it remains also very re-assuring. The times that we live in demand that we speak of things to come. Be comforted in the knowing that God is always in control.
Reflection Questions:
- Are there areas in your life where you’re tempted to give loyalty or trust to worldly systems more than to God?
- How can you practise “patient endurance and faithfulness” in your daily walk with Christ, especially in a culture that may oppose your values?
- In what ways can you remain discerning about the voices and powers that seek to shape your beliefs, choices, and worship?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You for revealing the truth about the battle between Your Kingdom and the powers of this world. Strengthen us to be faithful, even when the world demands our silence or our compromise. Give us discernment to recognise false authority, and courage to stand firm when we are pressured to bow. Let our names remain written in the Lamb’s book of life, and help us endure with grace, truth, and unwavering trust in You. We believe that Jesus reigns now and forever. In His name we pray, Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
Graham Hood.
