Devotional: God Raises Up Leaders
Scripture: Daniel 2:21 (NIV)
“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”

The world of politics can seem murky, power-hungry, and full of compromise. For many believers, stepping into that world might feel unthinkable—too worldly, too complex, too far from spiritual matters. Yet Daniel 2:21 reminds us of a vital truth: God is sovereign over all human leadership.

The verse comes from Daniel’s praise after God revealed King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream to him. Daniel, a young exile in a foreign land, had been placed in a government training program under Babylonian rule. Despite the pagan culture and dangerous politics of the day, Daniel recognised that all power and authority belong to God. “He deposes kings and raises up others.” This is not just a statement about God’s power—it’s a declaration of trust in God’s ongoing control of human history.

This truth invites us to rethink how we view politics. Governments rise and fall, leaders come and go, but behind it all is the unseen hand of God. He can raise up godly people in high places—not for their own glory, but to serve His purposes. The Bible is full of examples of believers who stepped into public roles and made a powerful impact.

🔹 Joseph (Genesis 41) was elevated to second-in-command in Egypt. His journey began with betrayal and slavery, but God used him to prepare the nation for famine and to save lives. Joseph didn’t abandon his faith in the palace—he lived it out boldly, interpreting Pharaoh’s dream through God’s wisdom and giving credit to the Lord.

🔹 Daniel (Daniel 6) rose to high office under multiple pagan kings, from Babylon to Persia. He remained unshaken in his faith, even when it put him at odds with the law. His integrity, wisdom, and prayer life were so consistent that his enemies could only attack him on the basis of his devotion to God.

🔹 Esther (Esther 4:14) found herself in a royal position during a national crisis. She risked her life to intercede for her people, guided by her uncle’s wise reminder: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Esther’s story is a stirring example of how God places His people where they are needed.

🔹 Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1–2) served as a cupbearer to the king and later as a governor. His heart broke over Jerusalem’s ruins, and he used his access and leadership to rebuild the city walls and restore the community, all while staying rooted in prayer and Scripture.

Each of these figures shows that faith and public service do not have to be at odds. In fact, they are most powerful when they go hand in hand. Politics, when handled with integrity, can be a platform for justice, mercy, and wise stewardship.

For believers today, Daniel 2:21 is a grounding truth in uncertain times. As we watch leaders come and go, governments succeed and fail, and laws change with the seasons, we need not fear. God is still on His throne. He knows the times and the seasons, and He raises up people—including Christians—to serve His purposes in every generation.

If God calls you to public service—whether as a local councillor, a senator, or a quiet advisor behind the scenes—He will equip you. Just as He gave Joseph wisdom, Daniel discernment, Esther courage, and Nehemiah leadership, He will give you what you need. What matters most is that you remain faithful where you are, and ready to step forward if He calls.

Let us pray for our leaders. Let us encourage those among us who are called to lead. And let us remember that no earthly throne or law is above the will of God, who changes times and seasons and raises up whom He pleases.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you believe God could call you—or someone you know—to a leadership role in society? What would that look like?
  2. How can you be a person of influence in your community without compromising your faith?
  3. What qualities from Joseph, Daniel, Esther, or Nehemiah do you feel God is developing in your own life?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Papa God,

Thank You that You are sovereign over all rulers and seasons. You raise up leaders and guide the course of history according to Your perfect plan. We pray for our government and leaders today—give them wisdom and integrity. And Lord, if You are calling any of us into roles of leadership or influence, give us the courage to step forward in faith. Help us to lead with humility, serve with love, and always point others to You. We trust You in every season. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.
