Devotions, Faith & Politics

Devotional: Citizens of Heaven, Servants on Earth
Scripture: Philippians 3:20 (NIV)
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 3:20 offer a profound reminder of where our true identity lies. “Our citizenship is in heaven.” This isn’t just a poetic phrase—it’s a defining truth for every believer. We belong, first and foremost, not to a nation, a political party, or a culture, but to the Kingdom of God.

Paul wrote this to the church in Philippi—a Roman colony where citizenship carried status, privilege, and responsibility. Roman citizens were proud of their standing. Yet Paul shifts the focus from earthly status to eternal belonging. No matter where we live or what government we serve under, our truest allegiance is to Christ.

This perspective has huge implications for how we engage with the world—especially in politics or public service. If our primary citizenship is in heaven, then our actions on earth should reflect heavenly values. We don’t abandon civic responsibility, but we approach it through a Kingdom lens.

This means we vote, speak, and lead not just as Australians or citizens of a democracy, but as ambassadors of Christ. We carry His message, His justice, His compassion, and His truth into every sphere—including government.

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of people who lived this dual reality. Joseph remained faithful to God while serving as second-in-command in Egypt. Daniel prayed openly to the Lord while holding high political office in Babylon. Esther risked her life to intercede for her people from within the royal court. Nehemiah used his position with the king to rebuild Jerusalem.

None of them forgot where their ultimate allegiance lay. They served in the structures of the world but were anchored in the purposes of God. They lived as heavenly citizens—faithful to their calling, yet fully engaged in the world around them.

In a time when politics is increasingly polarised and people are often pressured to pick sides, Philippians 3:20 reminds us of a deeper identity. We are not defined by political labels. We are defined by Christ. Our conduct should reflect that we are part of a Kingdom where love is patient, truth is fearless, mercy is abundant, and justice is holy.

Being a citizen of heaven doesn’t mean withdrawing from earthly matters. On the contrary, it calls us to engage with grace and conviction. We should care about our society, speak up for the voiceless, defend righteousness, and seek peace. But we do so as pilgrims, not settlers—as those who know this world is not our final home.

Our hope, too, is different. “We eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Our confidence isn’t in elections, policies, or governments—it’s in Jesus. We live responsibly, but we don’t despair when the world fails us. We know who’s coming back. And we live today in light of that coming day.

In political involvement, this matters greatly. Christian leaders, candidates, or voters must always remember whose name they ultimately represent. It’s not about gaining power—it’s about being faithful witnesses. Our citizenship in heaven should guide every decision we make, every word we speak, and every cause we support.

Whether you’re called to public office or simply to be a faithful citizen where you are, Philippians 3:20 reminds you to live with Kingdom focus. Stand for truth, serve with humility, and shine like a light in the world. Because wherever you are, you carry the values of the place you truly belong—heaven.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean for you, practically, to live as a citizen of heaven in your community or public life?
  2. Are there areas where earthly loyalties are competing with your loyalty to Christ and His Kingdom?
  3. How can you bring heavenly values—truth, grace, justice—into your leadership, voting, or conversations about politics?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Papa God,

Thank You that our true citizenship is in heaven. In a world that often pulls us in different directions, help us to stay anchored in our identity as Your children. Whether we serve in politics, in our communities, or in quiet faithfulness each day, may our actions reflect the values of Your Kingdom. Teach us to live as ambassadors of Christ—full of grace, truth, and courage. And as we await Jesus’ return, help us to be faithful in all things. In His name we pray, Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.
