Devotional: Blessed in Rejection

Scripture:
“Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.” – Luke 6:22 (NIV)

Being rejected is never easy. Whether it’s subtle exclusion or outright hostility, it cuts deep. We’re wired to crave connection, understanding, and acceptance. But in Luke 6:22, Jesus flips the script. He says something that sounds completely upside down: “Blessed are you when people hate you…”

How can that be a blessing?

Jesus is speaking to His disciples—ordinary people who have chosen to follow Him in a world that won’t always welcome them. He’s preparing them for a life of opposition and making one thing clear: if you’re hated, excluded, or insulted because you belong to Him, you are blessed.

Let’s unpack what this really means.

1. Rejection for the Right Reasons

Jesus isn’t talking about any kind of rejection here. He’s not saying we’re blessed when people dislike us because we’re rude, arrogant, or difficult. The blessing comes “because of the Son of Man”—that is, because of our relationship with Jesus and our commitment to living His way.

When you choose to live with integrity, grace, truth, and love in a culture that often celebrates the opposite, you will face resistance. You might be misunderstood, left out, or even mocked. And that hurts.

But Jesus says: I see you. I know the cost. And you are blessed because of it.

Rejection doesn’t mean you’ve failed. In fact, it may mean you’re walking faithfully in a world that’s out of step with God.

2. Rejection Is Not the End of the Story

In the verses that follow, Jesus adds:
“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.” (Luke 6:23)

That’s not a natural response, is it? When people speak poorly of us or leave us out, joy is usually the last thing we feel. But Jesus invites us to see with eternal eyes.

Our reward isn’t found in people’s opinions—it’s found in heaven. It’s easy to forget that this world isn’t our final home. What we endure for Jesus here won’t be wasted. God sees every quiet act of faithfulness, every moment we choose truth over popularity, every time we stand for what’s right.

And He promises: You’re not missing out. You’re storing up eternal treasure.

3. You’re in Good Company

Rejection for the sake of Christ isn’t new. It’s been the experience of God’s people through the ages. In fact, Jesus reminds us that the prophets were treated the same way (Luke 6:23). The world has always resisted truth when it’s uncomfortable.

So when you’re excluded because of your faith, know this: you’re not alone. You’re walking the same path as Jeremiah, Elijah, Daniel, and even Jesus Himself. He was despised, misunderstood, and rejected—yet He never stopped loving.

And just like them, we’re called not to retreat, but to keep shining. Keep speaking truth. Keep living with kindness and courage. Rejection doesn’t define us—Jesus does.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you experienced rejection, exclusion, or insults because of your faith in Jesus? How did you respond?
  2. Is there a situation right now where you’re tempted to compromise in order to avoid being left out or judged?
  3. What would it look like to rejoice and trust God even in the face of rejection this week?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You for speaking truth even when it’s hard to hear. I confess that I sometimes avoid discomfort, and I want people to like me. But I also want to follow You fully. Help me not to fear rejection but to embrace the blessing that comes with standing for You. Strengthen me to live with courage and compassion, even when it’s costly. Remind me that I am never alone, and that my reward is with You—not in the approval of others.
In Jesus powerful name we pray,
Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.

Graham Hood.
