Devotional: Growing Through the Grit — Resilience in Trials
Scripture:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
— James 1:2–4 (NIV)
When you hear the word “trial,” what comes to mind? For some, it’s illness. For others, financial strain, family conflict, grief, or even burnout. Trials come in all shapes and sizes — and James, writing to believers scattered and suffering, doesn’t say if you face them, but when. It’s a guarantee: tough times will come. But what’s surprising — even jarring — is James’ advice about them:
“Consider it pure joy…”
Wait, joy? In hardship? That feels a bit backwards, doesn’t it?
But James isn’t talking about being happy about pain. He’s talking about a deeper, anchored joy that knows suffering is never wasted in God’s hands. When our faith is tested — stretched, strained, challenged — something begins to grow: perseverance. And that’s where resilience is born.
Tested Faith, Toughened Faith
Resilience doesn’t come from avoiding pain, but by facing it with the right perspective. Trials have a way of revealing what we truly rely on. When life shakes us, what spills out?
For a follower of Jesus, testing isn’t just something to survive — it’s something God uses to shape us. The original Greek word for “testing” here is the same one used for refining metals. It’s about purifying, strengthening, and proving something real and lasting.
James tells us to let perseverance “finish its work,” because it’s doing something eternal. Resilience isn’t just about getting through — it’s about being transformed along the way. Bit by bit, trial by trial, we become “mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
That doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a slow burn. Resilience grows when we choose to trust God in the mess, not just when it all makes sense.
Finding Joy in the Journey
Let’s be real — choosing joy in the middle of hardship doesn’t mean pretending everything’s fine. It means knowing that God is doing something even when we can’t see it. It’s about trusting that this moment, however hard, is part of a bigger story. He’s developing character, compassion, patience, and strength in you.
Think of it like training for a marathon. The early mornings, sore muscles, and mental fatigue aren’t pleasant — but they’re necessary. Each run makes you stronger. Every step gets you closer to the goal. Trials work in a similar way. They stretch our spiritual muscles. And while it might not feel good at the time, something good is being produced in us.
Aussie Resilience — Faith with Grit
In the Aussie spirit, we value grit — pushing on through droughts, floods, fires, setbacks, and hardship. But Christian resilience is different. It’s not just digging deep — it’s looking up. It’s knowing we don’t walk through the fire alone.
For the single parent wondering how to keep going, for the teenager facing anxiety, for the elderly person grieving loss, or the worker laid off unexpectedly — James is saying, “Don’t lose heart. God is doing something in you. Keep going.”
Joy in trials isn’t natural — but it is supernatural. It’s rooted in the trust that God doesn’t waste pain and His plan is still good, even when the path is rough.
Reflection Questions
- What current trial or challenge in your life is testing your faith the most right now?
Be honest with yourself and with God about what’s heavy on your heart. - In what ways have you seen past trials shape your character or strengthen your perseverance?
Can you recognise God’s hand even in the difficult seasons? - How can you shift your mindset from just enduring trials to actually growing through them?
What would it look like to choose joy today — not fake happiness, but real trust?
Prayer
Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You that You never leave me to face trials on my own. Even when life is difficult, You are still working in me and through me. Help me to see my challenges not as obstacles to joy, but as opportunities to grow. Build perseverance in me, Lord — not through comfort, but through the strength You provide when things are hard. Teach me to trust You deeper and to find joy in knowing You’re refining me, shaping me, and making me whole.
I want to be mature in my faith — strong, steady, and full of Your hope. Give me the resilience to keep going, and the grace to hold on to joy, even in the storms.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
Graham Hood.
