CWW WEEK 29 - Spiritual Discernment - Day 6
|
Devotional: Testing the Spirits
Based on 1 John 4:1
Scripture:
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
— 1 John 4:1 (NIV)
A Word for Discerning Days
In an age where information comes at us from every direction—sermons, podcasts, social media, books, conversations—it’s easy to assume that anything that sounds spiritual must be from God. But the apostle John gives a strong and timely warning: “Do not believe every spirit.”
This isn’t a call to suspicion, but a call to spiritual discernment. Not everything that claims to be true is truth. Not everyone who speaks about God speaks for God. That was true in John’s day, and it’s certainly true now. John is urging us to be careful listeners, prayerful thinkers, and Spirit-led followers of Jesus.
Discerning truth from error is not optional for the Christian—it’s essential.
What Does It Mean to “Test the Spirits”?
Testing the spirits means evaluating the source and message of any spiritual claim or teaching. John uses the word “spirits” to refer to the influences behind what people say and teach. Every message—no matter how convincing—comes from somewhere. It’s either inspired by God’s Spirit or it’s not.
We are called to test what we hear against the truth of God’s Word. Is the message consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ? Does it align with Scripture? Does it glorify God or lead us away from Him?
This requires more than just surface-level listening. It means developing a discerning heart—one shaped by regular time in Scripture, a relationship with the Holy Spirit, and a community of mature believers who walk in truth and grace.
Discernment isn’t about being critical or judgemental. It’s about being wise, alert, and spiritually mature—able to recognise what is truly from God.
Why Is This So Important?
John tells us exactly why this matters: “because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” The danger of deception is real. Some messages might sound encouraging or inspiring but can actually lead people away from the truth. Others may use the name of Jesus but distort His message.
False prophets don’t always look or sound dangerous. In fact, they often appear sincere. But sincerity does not equal truth. That’s why we must know the real gospel so well that any counterfeit becomes obvious.
Jesus Himself warned that false teachers would come, seeking to deceive even the elect (Matthew 24:24). Paul spoke of wolves in sheep’s clothing. And here, John picks up the same concern: we must be on guard—not paranoid, but prepared.
Cultivating a Discerning Heart
So how do we grow in this kind of discernment?
- Know the Word of God: The more familiar you are with Scripture, the easier it is to spot what contradicts it. A heart grounded in truth is less likely to be swayed by lies.
- Stay in close relationship with the Holy Spirit: The Spirit of God leads us into all truth (John 16:13). He prompts us when something is off, gives us peace when something is right, and helps us understand the Word deeply.
- Seek godly counsel: We were never meant to walk the Christian life alone. Mature believers can help us process teachings and situations with biblical clarity.
- Be humble and teachable: A discerning heart is not a proud heart. It’s one that says, “Lord, help me to see clearly. Correct me if I’m wrong. Keep me close to Your truth.”
Discernment is not just about protecting ourselves; it’s about loving others well. When we walk in truth, we help others do the same. We become light in a world filled with confusion and clarity in a culture of compromise.
Reflection Questions:
- Are there any voices or messages in your life that you need to evaluate more carefully in light of God’s Word?
- What practices help you grow in discernment and keep your heart anchored in truth?
- Have you asked the Holy Spirit to help you “test the spirits” and stay alert to deception?
Closing Prayer:
Dear Lord, Papa God.
Thank You for giving us Your Word and Your Spirit to lead us in truth. Teach me to be a discerning follower of Jesus—wise, humble, and anchored in Scripture. Help me not to believe every message that comes my way, but to test all things with Your help. Guard my heart from deception, and give me a deep love for what is true. May I walk in the light and lead others to do the same.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
