Devotional: Shining Where You Stand
Scripture: Matthew 5:13–16 (NIV)
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:13–16 are simple, but they carry extraordinary weight. Speaking to a crowd gathered on a hillside, He tells them—and us—that we are not just followers, but influencers in the truest sense. Salt. Light. A city on a hill.

This is not a passive faith. It’s a faith that affects the world around it. It brings flavour, healing, and preservation like salt. It exposes truth, gives direction, and dispels darkness like light. It’s not hidden or silent—it’s visible, active, and undeniable.

In the context of public life—whether politics, community service, or daily influence in your workplace—this passage becomes deeply practical. Jesus doesn’t say, “You might be salt and light,” or “Try to become salt and light.” He says, “You are.” It’s not a title we strive for; it’s an identity we live out.

The challenge is this: Are we hiding our light, or are we letting it shine? Are we blending into the culture around us, or are we standing out in love, truth, and righteousness?

In today’s world, especially in government or leadership roles, it’s tempting to dull the edges of our faith to fit in or to stay quiet so we’re not seen as “too religious.” But Jesus doesn’t call us to invisibility. He calls us to visibility—not for our own glory, but so people might see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

Think about the influence of Joseph, whose integrity in Pharaoh’s court preserved a nation. Or Esther, whose courage saved her people. Or Daniel, who continued to pray with his windows open even when the law forbade it. These weren’t preachers in the temple—they were God’s people in the public square, shining their light where it was needed most.

Even Nehemiah, a royal cupbearer, let his light shine by rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls, praying constantly, and leading with justice and compassion. None of these individuals hid their faith, but neither did they force it. They let their character, their actions, and their courage speak volumes.

Being salt and light in society doesn’t mean standing on a soapbox. It means showing up with grace and truth, being excellent at what we do, treating others with dignity, and making decisions that honour God. It means speaking when needed and being silent when wisdom calls for it. It means shining—not for attention, but to reflect the glory of God.

Salt only works when it’s in the food. Light only helps when it’s turned on. In the same way, your faith only impacts the world when it’s lived out, not hidden away.

If God places you in a position of influence—whether in government, leadership, or any public role—He expects your light to shine there. And if you feel overlooked or ordinary, remember this: even a small light can guide many when the night is dark.

The world doesn’t need louder Christians—it needs brighter ones. People who live with integrity, love their neighbours, and walk humbly with their God. People who shine in the classroom, in the workplace, in Parliament, in the local council, in the community hall.

This is your calling. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. Don’t hide. Shine.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to hide your faith rather than let it shine?
  2. How can your actions and attitudes reflect Christ to those in your community or workplace?
  3. What would it look like for you to be “salt and light” in a position of public or political influence?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Papa God.

Thank You for calling us to be salt and light in a world that so desperately needs Your truth and love. Help us to live boldly and graciously, letting our light shine wherever You place us. Whether in politics, the workplace, or our local community, may we reflect Your goodness and lead others to glorify You. Strengthen our witness, and give us courage to stand firm when it’s easier to hide. We want to honour You in every area of life. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.

Graham Hood.
