Devotional: Strength for the Struggle — True Resilience in Christ
Scripture:
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
— Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
We often hear Philippians 4:13 quoted as a personal motto — printed on mugs, bumper stickers, or gym walls. It’s a powerful verse, no doubt. But to truly understand its depth — especially in the context of resilience — we have to look at what Paul was going through when he wrote these words.
Paul wasn’t living his best life when he penned this verse. He was in prison, facing an uncertain future, having experienced beatings, hunger, betrayal, and hardship. Yet somehow, right there in the thick of it, he writes, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
That’s not just a catchphrase — that’s real, lived-out resilience.
Strength, Not from Self — but from Christ
Let’s be clear — Paul isn’t saying, “I can do anything I want because Jesus gives me superpowers.” He’s saying, “I can endure everything I face — because Jesus gives me the strength to get through it.”
That kind of strength isn’t about physical stamina or emotional toughness. It’s about spiritual resilience — the ability to keep trusting, keep going, and keep hoping, even when life is falling apart.
We’re often told to “dig deep” and “push through,” and while there’s merit in determination, Paul’s point is different: Resilience doesn’t come from within ourselves — it comes from Jesus living in us.
A Resilient Heart Learns Contentment
The full context of Philippians 4:13 shows Paul talking about contentment. He says he’s learned to be content whether he’s well-fed or hungry, living in plenty or in want. That’s a lesson only learned through experience — usually the hard way.
And that’s what makes this verse so comforting. Paul didn’t just survive the highs and lows — he was strengthened through them. He came out not bitter or broken, but stronger and more grounded in Christ.
That’s real resilience — not being unaffected by life, but being upheld by Christ in every circumstance.
Aussie Resilience, God’s Way
We Aussies often pride ourselves on resilience — weathering floods, fires, financial hits, and family crises with grit and humour. That’s part of our cultural DNA. But Christian resilience goes deeper than that.
It’s not just about staying on your feet — it’s about knowing who holds you up when you don’t have the strength to stand.
When the pressure’s on at work…
When your mental health is fragile…
When your family’s falling apart…
When your future feels uncertain…
You can say, like Paul, “I can do this… because Christ strengthens me.”
It’s not about pretending to be fine. It’s about knowing you don’t walk alone — and that Jesus doesn’t just walk beside you, He carries you when needed.
Strength for Every Season
There are seasons in life where resilience looks like rising above the waves. Other times, it’s simply not sinking. And sometimes, it’s just breathing and saying, “Lord, I need You.”
Paul’s words remind us that Jesus is enough. Not just enough for salvation — but enough for suffering, enough for stress, enough for the slow grind of everyday life.
His strength is not just for pastors, missionaries, or spiritual superheroes. It’s for you — the single mum doing her best, the young person facing anxiety, the bloke working long hours just to make ends meet. His strength is for the ordinary battler — because no battle is too small for God’s help.
Reflection Questions
- What situation in your life right now feels too heavy to carry alone?
Have you been trying to manage it in your own strength? - How might relying on Christ’s strength — rather than your own — change the way you approach your challenges?
What could surrender look like this week? - Are there areas where you’ve seen God’s strength carry you in the past?
How can remembering those moments encourage your resilience today?
Prayer
Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You that I don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. I confess that sometimes I try to push through in my own strength, and I end up worn out and discouraged. Please remind me today that Your strength is enough for whatever I’m facing.
When I feel weak, remind me that You are strong. When I want to give up, help me to lean on You instead. Teach me to be content not because life is perfect, but because You are present. Grow resilience in me that isn’t rooted in willpower, but in Your Spirit. Thank You for loving me through every season.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
Graham Hood.
