CWW Week 36 - Resilience - Day 6

Devotional: Unshaken — Resilience in the Refuge of God
Scripture:
“God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”
— Psalm 46:1–2 (NIV)
Sometimes life feels like it’s falling apart — like the very ground beneath your feet is crumbling. You get that phone call that changes everything. You lose something — or someone — you thought you couldn’t live without. You’re hit with a wave of anxiety or grief that won’t let up. In those moments, resilience can feel out of reach.
But Psalm 46 steps right into that chaos. The psalmist doesn’t write from a place of comfort or ease — he describes the world literally falling apart: the earth giving way, mountains crumbling into the sea. That’s a picture of total upheaval. Yet right in the middle of it, he declares something powerful:
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
That’s not a polite Sunday verse. That’s a battle cry for the soul. It reminds us that no matter what shakes around us, God remains steady.
The Strength Behind Resilience
Resilience isn’t about pretending everything’s fine when it’s not. It’s not about muscling through hardship with a forced smile. Real resilience — the kind that endures storms — comes from knowing where your refuge is.
A refuge is a safe place — a shelter from the chaos. And the psalmist doesn’t just say that God gives refuge; he says God is our refuge. In other words, the very presence of God is our safe place.
He’s not far off. He’s not waiting for us to get our act together. The verse says He’s an ever-present help — always near, always available, especially in trouble.
When the Earth Gives Way
We all face “earth-giving-way” moments. The diagnosis. The betrayal. The job loss. The deep, silent struggle that no one else sees. In those moments, fear feels justified.
But here’s what Psalm 46:2 says:
“Therefore we will not fear…”
That’s not denial. It’s defiance. It’s a choice to say, “Even when everything around me is falling apart, I won’t let fear rule my heart — because I know who’s holding me.”
This is the heart of resilience — not that we never feel fear, but that we don’t let it define us. We anchor ourselves in the one place that can’t be shaken: God Himself.
Aussie Resilience Anchored in God
In Australia, we’ve got a strong culture of “getting on with it.” Whether it’s natural disasters, family trials, or daily pressures, we’ve learned to push through. But biblical resilience invites us to go deeper than just pushing forward — it invites us to rest in God’s presence as we endure.
It’s not weakness to admit you need a refuge — it’s wisdom. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. He’s not asking us to carry the world — He’s offering to carry us through it.
So when you feel like you can’t take another step…
When your emotions are raw and your energy is gone…
When you’re not sure how you’ll get through the next hour, let alone the next season…
You can take shelter in God.
Stillness in the Storm
Later in the same Psalm, in verse 10, we read:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness in the middle of chaos is a mark of true resilience. Not stillness because everything’s peaceful — but stillness because your soul has found its anchor.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t need to pretend to be strong. You just need to run to the One who is your refuge — and stay there.
Reflection Questions
- What area of your life feels like it’s “giving way” right now?
Identify where you feel overwhelmed or unstable, and bring that honestly before God. - What does it mean for you personally to take refuge in God?
What practical steps can you take this week to draw nearer to Him? - How might God be inviting you to be still and trust Him more deeply in this season?
Are there fears you need to release in exchange for His peace?
Prayer
Dear Lord, Papa God,
Thank You for being my refuge and strength — not just in peaceful times, but right in the middle of life’s mess. When everything feels shaky, You are steady. When I feel like I’m falling apart, You hold me together.
Help me to trust You more deeply. Teach me to be still when I want to run, and to rest in Your presence when I feel like giving up. I don’t want to build my resilience on my own strength — I want it to come from You.
Thank You that I don’t have to face the storms alone. You are my shelter, my helper, and my peace. I choose to anchor my hope in You today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Have a great day today with Jesus.
