Devotional: “The Life That Never Dies”

Key Verse:
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’” — John 11:25–26 (NIV)

These words were spoken by Jesus in the middle of a heart-wrenching moment. Lazarus, His dear friend, had died. Martha, Lazarus’ sister, was grieving and confused. She knew Jesus could’ve healed her brother, but now he was gone. Still, she had hope—though she didn’t quite understand what Jesus was about to do.

And then Jesus said something absolutely staggering: “I am the resurrection and the life.”

More Than a Future Hope

Martha, like many of us, believed in a future resurrection. She said, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day” (John 11:24). That was good theology. But Jesus wanted her to see something more profound—resurrection isn’t just a future event. It’s a present reality, because it’s found in a Person.

When Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life,” He wasn’t offering empty comfort. He was declaring His identity. Life itself is found in Him—not just after we die, but now, today. His resurrection power isn’t only for the last day—it’s for the middle of our pain, confusion, and despair.

Life in the Middle of Death

Jesus continued, “The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” This is the paradox of the Christian life: even though our bodies may die, we are not dead. When we believe in Jesus, we receive eternal life—not just later, but immediately.

This doesn’t mean we won’t face trials, suffering, or even death. But it does mean that death no longer has the final say. We live in the light of resurrection, not under the shadow of the grave.

This truth should shape how we live every single day. We don’t need to fear the end. We don’t need to chase after things that fade. We belong to the One who conquered death—and offers that victory to us.

Do You Believe This?

Jesus ends His statement to Martha with a piercing question: “Do you believe this?” It’s not just a question for her—it’s a question for us too.

Faith isn’t just about agreeing with doctrines. It’s about trusting Jesus as the source of life itself—even when everything around us seems to be dying. It’s about believing He’s still working, still present, and still victorious even when we’re in the tomb of waiting or loss.

And it’s about more than eternal life in the far-off future. It’s about living a resurrected life now—a life filled with purpose, peace, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Living Like He Is the Life

So what does it look like to live in the power of the resurrection today?

  • We walk with hope, even in grief, because death doesn’t define our future.
  • We resist sin, not in our strength, but through the power of Christ living in us.
  • We share the gospel, because we know everyone needs the life Jesus offers.
  • We live with eternity in mind, valuing what lasts, not what fades.

The same Jesus who stood at Lazarus’s tomb and called him out still stands at the edge of our brokenness and calls us to life. The question is: Will we trust Him? Will we live like He truly is the resurrection and the life?

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus is “the resurrection and the life”? How does this truth affect how you see death, loss, or suffering?
  2. Are there areas in your life where you’ve been living more in fear than in the power of resurrection? What might Jesus be calling back to life in you?
  3. How can you live more fully in the reality of eternal life today—not just one day in the future, but right now?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Papa God,

Thank You for sending Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life. Sometimes I forget that this isn’t just about the end of life—it’s about the fullness of life now. I confess that I often live like someone who’s afraid, discouraged, or spiritually asleep.

But You have called me to live in the light of the resurrection. Open my heart to fully believe that Jesus is my life—my hope, my strength, my future. Help me live every day in the freedom and confidence that comes from knowing death has no hold on me.

Call back to life anything in me that has been buried—faith, joy, peace, purpose. Teach me to live like someone who has already passed from death to life.

In Jesus’ powerful name,
Amen.

Have a great day today with Jesus.

Graham Hood.
