Devotional on Mark 1:9-11 (NKJV)

Devotions, The Being Of God

Week 4 – Day 2 – The Being Of God:

“It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptised by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'”

We have spent all our time together thus far, examining the character, nature and identity of God. We now understand that we were created in His image and now we need to unpack the very being of God.

We should by now be getting our heads around the nature of the three in one God as we understand our own three in one nature; mind, body and spirit. We now know that if a psychological un-wellness (the mind) is not dealt  with it will become a physical un-wellness (the body) and this then affects our demeanour (the spirit).

It’s kind of simple when we think of this topic that way and our aim is to be practical in this journey right?

So was there ever a time when the three person nature of God was ever visible on Earth?

Yes. It was the day that John The Baptist baptised Jesus. This event has been faithfully recorded in all the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. As the scripture above records; there was Jesus the Son in the river, The Holy Spirit in the form of the dove and the voice from Heaven, the Father endorsing His only begotten Son and sending Him on His ministry. What a sight that must have been!

The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist holds profound significance in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. It marks the beginning of His public ministry and serves as a pivotal moment in the revelation of His identity as the Son of God. As we reflect on this event, let’s look into its spiritual lessons and implications for our lives.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Jesus’ baptism invite us to reflect on our own identity and relationship with God?
  2. Can you see now how we are created in the image of God and what that means?
  3. Are you now prepared to honour your mind body and spirit by honouring the same in God?

Just as Jesus was affirmed as the beloved Son of God, we, too, are beloved children of God through faith in Christ. Jesus’ baptism reminds us of our identity as God’s cherished children and calls us to live in the light of this truth, seeking to honour God in all that we do.

Heavenly Father, Papa God thank You for the profound truth revealed in the baptism of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to embrace humility and obedience as we follow His example. May the descent of Your Holy Spirit empower us for Your service, and may we always find our identity and worth in being Your beloved children. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
